We recently worked with Rebecca Newnham on a project for Kenco, where we commissioned her to build a series of animal sculptures from recycled glass. Rebecca was our first choice for this project due simply to her prowess as a sculptor. The rest was a bonus. She embraced the project wholeheartedly; she was enthusiastic, committed and passionate on every level, and the end result is testament to this. She was a pleasure to work with at every stage, being as accommodating and helpful about the work, as she was knowledgeable about her discipline. As such, she added an invaluable dimension to the project and its success is in a great part attributable to her. We would love to work with her again.

Rebecca has been a pleasure to work with. Producing the sculptures in a sustainable way was really important to us and we really appreciated the creative ways in which she sourced glass; from collecting bottles at her local school to using glass from an old greenhouse. The sculptures which she created were magnificent, with beautiful details, and we were delighted with the end result.

For the last 20 years Rebecca has been steadily producing sculpture both to commission and for exhibition. The commissions rise from recommendation, from the bodies of work produced for exhibition and from competitions.
In the summer of 2011 Rebecca was commissioned by Kenco and JWT to make a series of animal sculptures with a recycled glass skin to promote Kenco Coffee’s new glass jars. These animals include a 4m tall Snake, winding around a lamppost; a pair of Giraffes, one 4m tall and the other 2m tall; a family of Penguins, Dad is 1.1m tall, Mum is 1m tall, the teenager is 0.8m tall and the baby is 0.5m tall; the Crab sculpture is 2m diameter and 1.25m tall They all use glass as a skin in different ways; the snake has a skin made from fire polished green glass from beer and wine bottles, cut into triangles for the snake’s back and long thin pieces for the belly. The giraffes, crab and Penguins all use recycled window glass, coloured by firing the glass with enamels, minerals before cutting and polishing into different treatments appropriate for each animal. The Crab has rows of glass marbles set into the claws. The sculptures were positioned in 4 cities around the UK: the Snake was at Westfield shopping centre in West London, the Giraffes were at Liverpool One, Chavasse Park, the Penguins were in Bristol at the Centre Promenade fountains and the Crab was in Birmingham in the fountain in Chamberlain Square. The sculptures will stay in these positions for 2 weeks before they moved to new homes which are 'Pierre' the snake is at South Lakes Wild Animal Farm, Cumbria. 'Connie and Stan' the giraffes are at Ouseburn Farm, Newcastle. 'The Roberts Family' of penguins are at West Meadows Primary School, Barnsley and 'Lois' the crab is at PeBel Community Centre, North Wales. Click on the Kenco facebook icon to see more images.
